Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are made of porcelain or other tooth-colored materials that look just like your natural teeth. They are thin shells that fit over the front part of teeth to restore them, improve their shape and color, and protect teeth from future damage. Veneers can drastically improve your smile and confidence.

What are veneers used for?

Veneers can improve the appearance of teeth that are:

  • Stained
  • Misshapen
  • Too small
  • Crooked
  • Chipped
  • Cracked
  • Worn down
  • Weak
  • Gapped
  • Discolored

Veneers are strong, long-lasting, and natural-looking. They require less tooth enamel removal than dental crowns and don’t stain easily. Dr. Barocas might pair veneers with other dental restorations to perfect your smile makeover.

Are veneers right for me?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers, Dr. Barocas reviews your dental history, examines your teeth, and completes dental X-rays. To be a good candidate for the procedure, you must have healthy teeth and gums with no decay – and good dental hygiene habits. If you do have tooth decay, Dr. Barocas can treat it before veneer placement.

What happens during veneer placement?

To prepare your teeth for veneer placement, Dr. Barocas removes a small portion of enamel from the front and sides of your teeth. She takes impressions or digital scans of your teeth so a dental lab can create custom veneers for you. You might receive temporary veneers in the meantime.

After several days when your new veneers are ready, Dr. Barocas ensures they fit correctly on your teeth. She cleans your teeth and permanently bonds veneers to them to restore their function and appearance.

How should I care for my veneers?

Veneers are long-lasting if you care for them properly. Avoid chewing on ice, candy, and other hard objects, and don’t bite your fingernails. Brush your teeth and gums twice daily, floss every day, and attend routine dental exams and cleanings with Dr. Barocas and her team.

If veneers become loose or damaged, see Dr. Barocas right away to get them fixed and prevent complications.
